EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT:

The 2023 Canadian National Blind Hockey Tournament will be the BIGGEST event in the history of the Para sport of Blind Hockey with over 200 players and coaches participating from 11 Canadian provinces and five different countries including the USA, Finland, England, and Scotland!

(TORONTO. March 24, 2023) Canadian Blind Hockey is thrilled to announce that the world’s original Blind Hockey Tournament is back and bigger than ever with a record over 200 participants competing in six different divisions including: Children, Youth, Low Vision & Development, Open, Women’s, and Canada vs USA.!

The 2023 Canadian National Blind Hockey Tournament takes place at the Mattamy Athletic Centre – the former Maple Leaf Gardens – in Toronto, ON from March 24 – 26, and is presented by AMI and brought to you by CNIB Foundation. All games are free and open to the public to attend and will be streamed live on the Canadian Blind Hockey YouTube Channel.

Opening ceremonies take place at 11:00 am on Friday, March 24, in front of an expected packed house as more than 1000 students from across the city are planning to come cheer on Team Canada as they look to defend their title against Team USA in the fourth installment of the International Blind Ice Hockey Series. The powerhouse Team Canada is undefeated against their American rivals having won the series in 2018, 2019, and 2022. Team Canada, and especially the seven local players and coaches, will be highly motivated as this will be the first-time that the best-on-best competition takes place in Toronto. View the roster here.

Immediately following Canada vs USA is the Women’s Blind Hockey Showcase Game that features 25 players from Canada, the USA, and Finland competing in only the second-ever all Women’s game. Blind Hockey has always been a co-ed sport, however the vast majority of participants have been men. Thanks in part to Canadian Blind Hockey’s new Girls & Women’s program stream more than 17 percent of participants across all divisions are female as the organization continues to work to grow that side of the game.

“The National Tournament has always been the catalyst for growing the sport,” said Canadian Blind Hockey Executive Director Matt Morrow. “When we founded this event in 2013 there were 45 players competing in one division. We had only one American, only two women, and no children or youth. So it’s truly incredible that at our ninth annual National Blind Hockey Tournament we now have six different divisions providing opportunities for everyone to participate and compete at all levels.”

The Para sport of Blind Hockey is played by athletes who are blind or partially sighted who have approximately 10% vision or less. The sport uses an adapted puck that makes noise and is larger than a traditional puck.

Teams Named in Honour of NHL Original Six & Youth Partners

For the 2023 Canadian National Blind Hockey Tournament the adult teams are named in honour of the NHL’s “Original Six.” The teams in the Open Division will be named the Bruins, Hawks, Rangers and Wings; the teams in the Low Vision & Development Division will be the Leafs and the Habs. These names are fitting for a tournament taking place at the historic former Maple Leaf Gardens which hosted the Original Six era. The teams in the Children and Youth Division will be named the Otter’s in honour of our partnership with the W Ross MacDonald School for the Blind in Brantford, and the 67’s in honour of our partnership with the OHL’s Ottawa 67’s.

It’s International Women’s Day 2023 and we are celebrating all of the amazing girls and women who continue to break down barriers!

On #IWD2023, we are proud to announce Katie Duncan, @duncanhockey.snd13 as our Girl’s and Women’s Blind Hockey Summit and Women’s Division Head Coach!

Katie (Duncan) Wilton is the head coach & owner of Duncan Hockey Skills & Development Ltd. which was established in 2020.

Duncan has been coaching since 2010, and has coached at various levels; age and skill. Her coaching style focuses around knowledge and technique, with a whole lot of fun! Coach Duncan has been coaching with ASRAB for the last few skating & hockey seasons, and recently spending time on the ice with the Seeing Ice Dogs in Calgary, AB.

Spending time coaching athletes on improving their skating and hockey skills is just a small part of why Duncan coaches. Connecting with athletes to help them set goals, achieve their goals, build confidence & celebrate the little victories in the game and in life is what she aims to be a part of. Duncan also likes to remind athletes to have fun, because if nothing at all hockey is fun, and hockey can be fun for everyone!

Watch Coach Katie in action as she coaches the Women’s division March 24-26 and supports the Girl’s and Women’s Summit on March 23!

Here is Laura Mark, Girls and Women’s Program coordinator and blind hockey player along with Amanda Provan, Team Canada’s first female blind hockey player talking about the upcoming Women’s Summit March 23 in Toronto:

The tournament includes 13 members of the champion 2022 Canadian National Blind Hockey Team & 17 players from across Alberta

Canadian Blind Hockey is hosting its 2022 Western Regional Blind Hockey Tournament this weekend in Calgary, Alberta. The event takes place in the main bowl of the WinSport Arena at Canada Olympic Park. All games are free and open to the public to attend and will be broadcast live on the Canadian Blind Hockey YouTube Channel.

The event features 40 Blind Hockey players from across Canada, the United States, and England who have been drafted into three teams named in honour of the Alberta Blind Hockey programs: the SeeHawks, Bullseye, and Seeing Ice Dogs. The teams will compete in a round-robin competition on Friday and Saturday, and the top two teams will compete on Sunday for the gold medal and the right to be called western champions.

The tournament will feature an extremely strong field of athletes as 13 members of the 2022 – 23 Canadian National Blind Hockey Team will be divided among the three teams. This will be the first major event for the Para sport of Blind Hockey since Team Canada defeated Team USA 3 games to 0 to win the third 2022 International Blind Ice Hockey Series in October.

The Para sport of Blind Hockey is played by athletes who are blind or partially sighted who have approximately 10% vision or less. The sport uses an adapted puck that makes noise and is larger than a traditional puck as well as some adapted rules to make the game accessible. The sport is co-ed, and nearly 20% of all participants registered this weekend are Women’s Blind Hockey players.

Canadian Blind Hockey programs and events are made possible by national partners AMI, CNIB Foundation, the Daniel family Foundation, and Manion.

The Western Regional Blind Hockey Tournament was founded in 2016 thanks to a grant from the Daryl K. Seaman Canadian Hockey Fund at the Calgary Foundation, which has been instrumental in helping to grow the Para sport of Blind Hockey across Canada. The 2022 Western Regionals are supported by a hosting grant from Tourism Calgary. Thank you to the City of Calgary and all of our partners for supporting Blind Hockey in Canada!

The powerhouse Canadian National Blind Hockey Team completed the three-peat last weekend by sweeping their American rivals to win the third ever International Blind Ice Hockey Series. Canada defeated Team USA by scores of 7 – 1, 5 – 1, and 7 – 1 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to claim their third consecutive title having previously won both the 2018 series in Pittsburgh and 2019 series in Ottawa.

Canada faced adversity early on as team captain Kelly Serbu and linemate Mark DeMontis were both lost to injuries early in the first game, however assistant captains Jason Yuha and Simon Richard stepped up in their absence to lead the team to victory. Yuha won the tournament scoring title by posting 6 goals and 6 assists for 12 points in only three games, while Richard was second in scoring with 3 goals and 6 assists for 9 points while mostly playing defence.

It was a total team effort for Canada with nine of the eleven available skaters contributing at least one point in the series, which was highlighted in game two when Canada had five different goal scorers in the decisive 5 – 1 victory to clinch the series. All three goaltenders played a game each while Canada surrendered only one goal in each game.

Newcomer Chaz Misuraca was a dynamic presence at both ends of the ice and led rookie scoring with three goals, while Alex Angus MacEachen made his presence known in his return from the long-term injury reserve with a highlight-reel goal and two assists.

“I’m so proud of this group,” said coach and GM Luca DeMontis. “We had major roster turn over from the last team with five rookies making their debuts, and we lost two big players right away. This group really showed resilience and mental toughness and demonstrated the next player up mentality as they stuck to the plan and really executed a dominant performance.”

Team Canada featured eleven returning players who were part of the previous championship teams, as well as five rookies making their Team Canada debut. The team is made up of players from across Canada representing five provinces including Alberta, BC, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec.

The Para sport of Blind Hockey is played by athletes who are blind or partially sighted who have approximately 10% vision or less. The sport uses an adapted puck that makes noise and is larger than a traditional puck. Currently only Canada and the USA have national teams, however there are now Blind Ice Hockey programs in England, Finland, Sweden, and Russia. The web broadcast of the event drew nearly seven thousand viewers from ten different countries as the Para sport continues to grow around the world.

Next up for Canadian Blind Hockey is the 2022 Western Regional Blind Hockey Tournament at the Winsport Arena in Calgary taking place November 20 – 22. The event will include players from the Vancouver Eclipse, Edmonton SeeHawks, Central Alberta Bullseye, and host Calgary Seeing Ice Dogs Blind Hockey teams, as well as others from across Canada, the USA, and around the world.

Canadian Blind Hockey is thrilled to announce that the 2022 Canadian National Blind Hockey Tournament is returning to the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, Ontario. The event takes place from March 24 to 27 and will include the first-ever Girls & Women’s Blind Hockey Summit, as well as a Children & Youth Multi-Sport Camp. The tournament includes Children & Youth, Low Vision & Development, and Open Division competitions, with well over 100 players registered from across Canada as well as the USA, England, and Finland.

The tournament begins with a historic moment for the Para sport of Blind Hockey, with the first-ever Women’s Blind Hockey Game. This event is a major milestone in the growth of the co-ed Para sport of Blind Hockey, which had only two female players at the inaugural tournament in 2013.

The National Team Celebrity Showcase Game will feature some of the best Blind Hockey players on the planet competing with some celebrity All-Stars. Members of the Canadian National Blind Hockey Team Program will be divided into two teams to compete with sighted players including NHL Alumni, which should produce one of the fastest and most exciting Blind Hockey Games of all time.

The tournament is also a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Toronto Ice Owls Blind Hockey who were founded in 1972 and are the world’s first Blind Hockey Team. In recognition of this milestone the tournament teams will be named in honour of various Blind Hockey clubs across Canada. The four-team Open Division will have players drafted onto teams named after Canadian Blind Hockey’s original four members – the Ice Owls, Eclipse, Hiboux, and Seeing Ice Dogs; the Low Vision & Development Division will have players drafted onto teams named after Canada’s newest programs the Bullseye and SeeCats; and the Children and Youth Division will be a competition between teams named after two of our programs the 67’s and Otters.

Hello, Blind Hockey community!

Canadian Blind Hockey is thrilled to announce that the 2022 Canadian National Blind Hockey Tournament is returning to the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, Ontario. The event takes place from March 25 to 27, and will feature children, youth, and adult competitions with players from across Canada and around the world.

We are requesting all interested players complete pre-registration by next Friday, February 18 to guarantee your spot. Please complete the Google Form Pre-Registration here. Final registration including payment will commence in March.

Prior to the tournament, Canadian Blind Hockey will be also hosting the first-ever Girls & Women’s Blind Hockey Summit, as well as a Children & Youth Multi-Sport Camp for that will introduce a variety of Para sport opportunities on Thursday, March 24. Thanks to grants from the WISE Fund, the Daryl K Seaman Canadian Hockey Fund at the Calgary Foundation, and the participation of the Government of Canada, accommodations on Wednesday, March 23 will be provided at no cost to those participating in these two camps. More information is below.

The format of the tournament will depend on final registration numbers, however, we anticipate hosting an event similar to 2018 and offering Children and Youth, Adult Low Vision & Development, and Open Division Tournaments. The Tournament will begin Friday morning and end no later than 4:00 pm on Sunday afternoon, so players should book travel accordingly.

The registration fee for the tournament is $150 plus hotel. The hotel accommodations are $75 per night if you share a room with another player, and $150 per night for your own room. Our most common registrations are typically:

Three nights’ accommodation with another player: $375 total cost

Three nights’ accommodation on your own or with family: $600 total cost

Canadian Blind Hockey proudly offers a financial assistance program so that cost is not a barrier to participating in Blind Hockey. Should you be interested in participating in the tournament but require financial support please contact Executive Director Matt Morrow at mattmorrow@blindicehockey.com.

Players from outside of Canada who wish to participate are responsible for determining and following all arrival requirements into Canada. Current Government of Canada travel guidelines are available here.

In order to enter the arena all players, volunteers, and spectators age 12 and older will be required to be fully vaccinated as defined by the province and provide their proof of vaccination.

Girls & Women’s Blind Hockey Summit Information

Canadian Blind Hockey has been developing a Girls & Women’s program stream with a series of virtual events, and we are thrilled to announce the first in-person Girls and Women’s Blind Hockey Summit! The event takes place on Thursday March 24 & Friday March 25 as part of the 2022 Nationals.

In addition to team building and training opportunities, we also anticipate having the first-ever Women’s Blind Hockey Showcase Game on Friday, March 25. This is also the perfect opportunity for players who would like to participate in Nationals but do not want to compete in a co-ed setting. There is no additional cost to participate in the Girls and Women’s Summit and Wednesday night accommodations will be provided at no cost thanks to grants from the WISE Fund and Daryl K Seaman Canadian Hockey Fund at the Calgary Foundation.
