On June 27, 2009, a 22-year-old Toronto Ice Owls player named Mark DeMontis departed on the “Courage Canada Quest for the West” — rollerblading over 5,000 km across five provinces to raise funds for Blind Hockey programming for children and youth who are blind or partially sighted.

With those funds, Mark put on the organization’s first learn-to-skate and Blind Hockey field trips and supported the framework for the first national tournament. He served as volunteer President of Courage Canada from 2009 to 2016, when the organization became Canadian Blind Hockey.

Mark was inducted into the Canadian Blind Hockey Hall of Fame in 2019 in the Builder category. He remains an active member of the community and of the Canadian National Blind Hockey Team.
